Schubert's Instrumental Music - A Listener's Guide. Unlocking the Masters Series, No. 19). Unlocking the Masters. John Bell Young explores some of the richest and most memorable instrumental music ever written. How did this prolific musician compose more than a thousand masterpieces in a career that spanned less than two decades? Young's colorful analysis of a Schubert's greatest orchestral, piano and chamber works deftly illuminates these issues. The accompanying CD features superb performances by Claudio Arrau.

Piano – Paul Badura-Skoda. 3. Fantasia In C Major, D. 760 ("Wanderer"): Adagio. Piano – Paul Badura-Skoda. 4. 760 ("Wanderer"): Allegro. Composed By – Franz Schubert. Liner Notes – John Bell Young.

Schubert was of course overshadowed by Beethoven in his lifetime, the older composer dying only a year before Schubert; in those days Vienna, not exactly large today, was considerably smaller.

Franz Schubert belonged to a large family headed by his schoolmaster father. His father and a local teacher taught him music but his ability quickly exceed their standard. He joined the Imperial Court Chapel Choir as a boy soprano where he received further tuition, one of his teachers being the same Salieri who had been accused at one stage of poisoning Mozart (see the film "Amadeus" for more about this myth). One of his brief teaching positions was to provide tuition to the daughters of Count Esterhazy in Hungary, for whose house Haydn had previously worked on a permanent basis.

Franz Peter Schubert (German: ; 31 January 1797 – 19 November 1828) was an Austrian composer of the late Classical and early Romantic eras. Despite his short lifetime, Schubert left behind a vast oeuvre, including more than 600 secular vocal works (mainly Lieder), seven complete symphonies, sacred music, operas, incidental music and a large body of piano and chamber music

Wilhelm Kempff plays the complete Schubert piano sonatas in these recordings long admired by collectors and enthusiasts. Recorded between 1955 and 1969. Those wanting a comprehensive survey of this repertoire need look no further"- Penguin Guide. Wilhelm Kempff was a master of poetic lyricism, with a wondrous keyboard touch and a breathtaking command of subtle dynamics and tonal colorations-all invaluable attributes of any Schubert interpreter.

In his 31 years, Schubert devoted much of his life to chamber music, composing 15 string quartets, two piano trios, string trios, a piano quintet commonly known as the Trout Quintet, an octet for strings and winds, and his famous quintet for two violins, viola, and two cellos. the cello part may be lacking, but they were delightful, nonetheless). Piano Trios 1-15 Piano Trios 16-30 Piano Trios 31-45.

The Trout Quintet (Forellenquintett) is the popular name for the Piano Quintet in A major, D. 667, by Franz Schubert. The piano quintet was composed in 1819, when he was 22 years old; it was not published, however, until 1829, a year after his death. Rather than the usual piano quintet lineup of piano and string quartet, the Trout Quintet is written for piano, violin, viola, cello and double bass
