Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune (L. 86), known in English as Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun, is a symphonic poem for orchestra by Claude Debussy, approximately 10 minutes in duration. It was composed in the year 1894, the same year that the piece was first performed. It was first performed in Paris on 22 December 1894, conducted by Gustave Doret. The flute solo was played by Georges Barrère.

Afternoon of a Faun: The three last tracks in this CD are performances by the New York Philharmonic with Leonard Bernstein as conductor. All three recordings are superb, and these versions by Bernstein are among the best versions of these movements in the market even nowadays. The Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun (that is the real title of the piece) is a languorous evocative orchestral work inspired by the poem L'après-midi d'un Faune by Stéphane Mallarmé  . It is mostly advisable to listen to the complete work: Nuages (Clouds), Fêtes (Festivals), and Sirènes (Mermaids) instead of just this movement, especially if you are attracted to the mysterious, the mythical or the legendary.

The ballet, The Afternoon of a Faun (French: L'Après-midi d'un faune), was choreographed by Vaslav Nijinsky for the Ballets Russes, and was first performed in the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris on 29 May 1912. Nijinsky danced the main part himself. The music is Claude Debussy's symphonic poem Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune. Both the music and the ballet were inspired by the poem L'Après-midi d'un faune by Stéphane Mallarmé. The costumes and sets were designed by the painter Léon Bakst.

L'après-midi d'un faune (or The Afternoon of a Faun) may refer to the following: L'après-midi d'un faune (poem) by Stéphane Mallarmé. Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune (Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun), composition by Claude Debussy, inspired by Mallarmé's poem. L'après-midi d'un faune (The Afternoon of the Faun), poem by William Faulkner, his first published work. Afternoon of a Faun (Nijinsky), ballet by Vaslav Nijinsky, which uses Debussy's music and was also inspired by Mallarmé.
