The Grand Wazoo is a Jazz fusion album by Frank Zappa and The Mothers, released in November 1972. It was written and recorded during Zappa's period of convalescence after being assaulted in December 1971 in London, UK. Along with its predecessor Waka/Jawaka (July 1972), this album represents Zappa's foray into big band music, the logical progression from Hot Rats (1969) (which used a much smaller lineup). This was the last release on Zappa's own Bizarre Records label.

Frank Zappa - The Grand Wazoo CD (1986, Rykodisc RCD 10026) Original Japan. But I knew only one album of Zappa and The Mothers at that time and now with the information power over the net finally I read a lot of news and stories about how unique Frank Zappa as person is (and probably "has been"). That's enough to draw a conclusion that he's definitely prog. Musically this album is at par excellent with "Hot Rats".

Like its immediate predecessor, Waka/Jawaka, The Grand Wazoo was a largely instrumental jazz rock album recorded during Frank Zappa's convalescence from injuries sustained after being pushed off a concert stage. While Zappa contributes some guitar solos and occasional vocals, the focus is more on his skills as a composer and arranger. Most of the five selections supposedly form a musical representation of a story told in the liner notes about two warring musical factions, but the bottom line is that, overall, the compositions here are more memorably melodic and consistently engaging than.

Wazoo is a live album by Frank Zappa, posthumously released on October 30, 2007. It is a 2-CD set consisting of the complete concert given by "The Mothers of Invention/Hot Rats/Grand Wazoo" 20-piece big band on September 24, 1972 at the Music Hall, Boston, Massachusetts, United States. The material showcases Zappa's endeavors into jazz-based music, and many of the compositions were featured on the 1972 studio albums The Grand Wazoo and Waka/Jawaka and on the 1978 studio album Studio Tan. Rehearsals leading to these albums and concerts are documented on Joe's Domage (2004), while Imaginary Diseases (2006) presents live recordings with a stripped-down version of the big band named 'Petite Wazoo'.

Frank Zappa didn't invent the word "wazoo" or proliferate its usage. However, he was the first to use it in an album and song title that, surprisingly, had no accompanying lly censorable lyrics. The aural quality of the album possesses a life-affirming spirit, while the intermittent blurps, bleeps and "inside" soap opera buffoonery-once salient features amidst often brilliant instrumental interludes on earlier albums.

The Grand Wazoo, Zappa’s May 1973 LP, affirms this divine status. Less than a year prior, Waka/Jawaka took Zappa’s song writing capabilities to a larger scale. His progressions were polished a smidgen, his directions became clearer, and he and his band put together an excellent recording. Not so serious are the second and third songs on the album. For Calvin’ relieves the intensity of the opening track for the listener, but is it really necessary" Well, it may not be necessary, but this is a Frank Zappa album: you have to take the serious with the ridiculous. The saving grace of the tune is its quirky descent into a jazz/rock detonation; even at his silliest, Zappa keeps it musical, and therefore, keeps it real
