Othmar Schoeck is one of Switzerland's major composers and, like Sibelius and Richard Strauss, an important and singular figure in the transition from post-romanticism and the modern era, though like Strauss he paid little lip service to modernism. Lieder dominate Schoeck's worklist, and he was expert in the production of ballads; long, non-strophic song settings usually set to a narrative. This is where Schoeck was at his best, and yet to non-German speakers such settings require additional effort to grasp properly; not everyone is up to the task. Der Postillon, for tenor, male chorus & orchestra (or piano), Op. 18. Howard Arman, MDR Leipzig Radio Chorus, Mario Venzago.
