Peter Talbot Westergaard was born in 1931 at Urbana, and studied music at Harvard and at Princeton, where he is now a professor of music, teaching composition and theory. Following the success of Powder Her Face, The Royal Opera, Covent Garden, commissioned a new opera from Adès in the late 1990s. Working with a librettist, a poetic version of the Jonestown Massacre of 1978 was prepared, but the composer found it impossible to set it to music.

Again the setting (for two singers, here Phyllis Fay Farmer and Jeffrey Sweetland) is dissonant and meandering; the flow of verse is lost, no whimsy is discernible, and the instrumental accompaniment stops and goes in little wisps of sound.
