Vaughan Williams: The Wasps. Since the work's premiere by the Cambridge University Greek Club in 1909, there have been exactly two complete performances of Vaughan Williams' incidental music in context for Aristophanes' The Wasps: a radio broadcast in 1972 and this performance also taken from a radio broadcast in 2005. One can readily understand why. The score is, relatively speaking, early Vaughan Williams. Just back from his three-month trip to study with Ravel, the 38-year-old composer had yet to turn out much music that was characteristic, much less much music that was often performed. Henry Goodman (narrator). Hallé Orchestra & Chorus, Mark Elder. This recording has just about everything: robust comedy, sharp wit, sensuous delight, emotional uplift and food for thought all in one package. Catalogue No: CDHLD7510. Series: Elder Vaughan Williams Series. Length: 1 hour 45 minutes.

Composer Vaughan Williams. Conductor Sir Mark Elder. Soloists/Artists Henry Goodman, Narrator Richard Suart, Chorus leader James Burton, Choral Director Chorus. Ralph vaughan williams (1872-1958). THE WASPS Text by Aristophanes English singing translation and narration by David Pountney. The recording features Henry Goodman as the narrator; a virtuoso part requiring the portrayal of many roles including the protagonist Procleon and the antagonist, his son. This two-CD set features the full score of eighty minutes and Poutney’s incorporated dialogue of some twenty-five minutes, plus the well-known Wasps Suite.
