Sample this album Artist - Artist (Sample). In this sense Fricsay was more selective. But the great surprise arrives when you listen the Eroica. This particular CD, Volume 7, features the great Ferenc Fricsay, who died tragically young at the age of 48 in 1963. His albums of Beethoven Symphonies, the Dvorak "New World", and Bartok Piano Concertos are still regarded as definitive.
It is a delight to hear Fricsay tackle 20th Century masterpieces by Kodaly, Shostakovich and Hindemith on disc one, then dive into more standard fare with Beethoven and Mozart on disc two. The fact that half of these performances are in mono is not a distraction - the sound is excellent throughout the collection. Whether you are a serious collector of classical music or a beginner, the "Great Conductors of the 20th Century" has something for everyone
