Daniel-François-Esprit Auber (1782-1871), the most amiable French composer of the 19th century, came into his compositional abilities late in life. After Le Maçon (1825) and La Muette de Portici (1828), his life was filled with success. In 1829 he was appointed a member of the Institut, in 1839 Director of Concerts at Court, in 1842 Director of the Conservatoire, in 1852 Musical Director of the Imperial Chapel, and in 1861 Grand Officer of the Légion d’Honneur. But he was once a household name, and his pared style, with its fleet rhythms and controlled emotion, was once a byword of taste and the focus of a universal affection. The ubiquity of Auber’s overtures, once as popular as those of Rossini and Suppé, and the influence of his melodies and dance rhythms on piano and instrumental music, and on Romantic comic opera, especially in Germany, was overwhelming.
Daniel-François-Esprit Auber: Overtures, Vol. 1. 2016. The prolific Auber wrote 48 operas in all, so this could be a substantial series depending on comprehensiveness. Auber was influenced by Rossini, by the late heroic operas in particular, and the overture to Fra Diavolo (1830) has often enough served as a substitute performed for audiences who have heard too much William Tell. You can sample that to see if Dörner's approach is too laid-back for you; the theme of quiet, catlike tension followed by a heroic flourish is pure Rossini. The other overtures, much less often heard, often inflect the Rossini style in distinctively French ways
Listen to Rossini: Ouvertures by George Szell on Deezer. Composers: Gioacchino Rossini. 02. La scala di seta: Ouverture. 03. L'italiana in Algeri: Ouverture.
Daniel-François-Esprit Auber France Daniel François Esprit Auber (29 January 1782 ? 12/13 May 1871) was a French composer. The son of a Paris print-seller, Auber was born in Caen in Normandy. In 1822 began his long association with librettist Eugène Scribe. Their first opera, Leicester, shows evidence of the influence of Gioacchino Rossini in its musical style. Auber soon developed his own voice, however: light, vivacious, graceful, and stically French. Le maçon (1825) was his first major triumph, staying in the repertory until the 20th century, with 525 performances at the Opéra-Comique alone.
