Peter Gunn" is the theme music composed by Henry Mancini for the television show of the same name. The song was the opening track on the original soundtrack album, The Music from Peter Gunn, released in 1959. Mancini won an Emmy Award and two Grammys for Album of the Year and Best Arrangement. In his 1989 autobiography Did They Mention the Music? Mancini states: The wailing alto saxophone solo was played by big band veteran and Hollywood studio stalwart Ted Nash.

The "Peter Gunn Theme" won the first Grammy Award for Album of the Year. Mancini also had a long collaboration on film scores with the film director Blake Edwards. Henry Mancini produced the score for the Howard Hawks-directed, John Wayne-starring safari comedy Hatari! which included the well-known "Baby Elephant Walk". This is at first a fun blend of jazz and Afro-exotica, jungle drums mixed with a classic bop combo.

Charade (Main Title). Latest albums by Henry Mancini.

The qualifiers are necessary, for jazz had certainly appeared in films prior to the television series Peter Gunn in 1958. But it generally connoted the underside of society, as in the jazz-flavored score of The Man with the Golden Arm (1955). The use of jazz to evoke a kind of urbane sophistication began with Henry Mancini's score to Peter Gunn, and the usage remains current in the second decade of the 21st century. Steven Richman, Harmonie Ensemble New York.

Henry Mancini (April 16, 1924 – June 14, 1994) was an Academy Award-winning American composer, conductor and arranger. He is remembered particularly for being a composer of film and television scores - his best-known works are the jazz-idiom theme to The Pink Panther film series and Moon River. Mancini won a record number of Grammy awards, including a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1995. Mancini was born Enrico Nicola Mancini in the Little Italy neighborhood of Cleveland, Ohio, and grew up near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in the steel town of West Aliquippa, Pennsylvania.
