Guitar Fö is a largely instrumental disc made with a small group consisting of the excellent rhythm section of Bembeya Jazz and two rhythm guitarists. From the opening "Biduman", its immediately obvious how the maestro got his name; he simply has few equals as a player.

Album: Guitar Fo, 2004. Sekouba "Bambino" is the stage name of Sekou Bembeya Diabaté, a singer and musician born in Guinea, West Africa in 1964. He released his first solo recording in 1991, and throughout the 1990s continued to record solo material as well as to sing with the African salsa group Africando. His 1994 album Syli nationale ("National Elephant"), was a homage to the Guinea national football team.

This solo outing, back by the five-piece Bembeya rhythm section, is essentially the same sound that made them one of Africa's greatest outfits, but without the horns, leaving guitar very much front and center. Even some of the material comes from the band's repertoire, like the signature title track, a bravura piece of fingering where Diabaté can let rip in his trademark style, showing exactly why he earned his nickname: every note arrives with crystal clarity, and even the fastest runs have a gorgeous precision.

If you weren’t quite convinced by the band’s 2002 comeback album Bembeya, and the recent Guitar Fö from their mighty guitarist Sékou Diabaté, this 2-CD compilation really shows what all the fuss was about. It’s a thorough selection of their best work for the national Syliphone label, which began releasing local music in the mid 1960s.
