The LP was named for being their 20th overall album release. Much of it consists of outtakes from earlier albums.
Then from out of blue, the the band scheduled a nationwide tour with the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, (the little guy Lennon patted on the head and walked away from laughing due to sexual misconduct by the spiritual leader). Yep, in May of 1968, Mike Love admitted that he and the fans of the Beach Boys were out of step. From the get-go, the album was just not good, either in delivery, production (being recorded lo-fi in Brian’s home), or for the music. The only single from the album Friends, topped out at number 47 on the US charts and quickly disappeared (their lowest charting single in six years).
The Beach Boys' Christmas Album is the seventh studio album by the Beach Boys, released in November 1964. it contains five original songs and seven standards on a Christmas theme. The album proved to be a long-running success during subsequent Christmas seasons, initially reaching number six in the US Billboard 200 chart in its year of release and eventually going gold. Music historian James Perone wrote that it is "regarded as one of the finest holiday albums of the rock era".
Released when Cream and Jimi Hendrix were at their apex, the low-key pleasantries of Friends seemed downright irrelevant in mid-1968. Today it sounds better, but it's certainly one of the group's more minor efforts, as the members started to divide the songwriting more or less evenly among themselves, rather than letting Brian Wilson provide most of the material
