The Tears were an English rock group formed in 2004 by ex-Suede bandmates Brett Anderson and Bernard Butler. The duo were a much anticipated reunion and music critics praised their first concerts and debut album, Here Come the Tears. However, the project was short-lived as they disbanded in 2006, which allowed Anderson to focus on his solo career and Butler to become a full-time producer.
Here's where the Tears come in (alternatively, Here Come The Tears). Both Anderson and Butler were at low points in their careers. Neither of them had done anything that came close to their joint debut, Suede. While the latter half of the album doesn't have the immediate attractiveness of the first half (it's rooted in ballads more so than uppermid-tempo songs), "Brave New Century", "the Asylum" and sparse but fitting closer "A Love As Strong as Death" as highlights. Despite all of the positive opinions toward Butler's playing and composition techniques, I wasn't as impressed by his performance on this album as I was Anderson's.

Here Come the Tears is dominated by pop songs; brazen and beautiful pop songs, delivered in perfectly formed packages. Opening track and first single, 'Refugees' is swaggering, instant and majestic, and just shy of three minutes it's so brief you need to blast it again as soon as it's over. Butler has been able to intricately build songs according to the grand vision in his head, and the result is an astonishing wall of sound that at times feels like Spector producing the Spiders from Mars covering 'Bridge Over Troubled Water', only bigger. I kind of wish they'd ended the album with "The Asylum. Now that would have been a disconcerting ending. The lyrics find Anderson worrying about being put in an insane asylum, and pleading with his friends to stay loyal to him.
The Tears sound just like early Suede. Anderson's subject matter seems unchanged (the album is only seconds old when we "take to the streets"). Butler sounds like Butler. If you can stomach the sense that this all might be 10 years too late, there's plenty to enjoy: the vocal swoops in Apollo 13, the chummy Co-star ("When we're together, the world smiles"), and the majestic woo-hoos of Imperfection.
