If there was ever a Self album that would break into the mainstream this is it. Most Selfies(as Self fans sometimes call themselves) have mp3s of the album, and while some think it's disappointing, it would definitely please listeners of modern rock and punk. The guitars are very heavy on the album's mix, more than any other album Self has done, and the songs are as catchy as they've always been. I always thought Self sounded a bit like Weezer, and here it's more obvious than ever. It looks like it will never see a wide release, though.

It takes the harder guitar usage from their 1995 album, hip hop and funk from their 1996 album, more experimental ideas from their 2000 album, and even hints of orchestral pop to help deliver this album on a shiny silver platter. On paper it should bomb, but somehow Mahaffey wrote an album that is both consistent, contemporary, and timeless, which is no small feat. From the opening lines One bad engine lost power to the system, The media dismissed them, Cause they all died up there you know exactly what you are getting into. Breakfast with Girls strikes an almost scientific balance between starry- eyed innocence and jaded decadence; Mahaffey may not be the coolest kid in school, but he still dreams of a life of jet- setting, celebrity- schmoozing leisure far away from his Tennessee digs. While that's all well and good, the actual music on Breakfast with Girls is a slightly different matter
There are more textures on this 1999 DreamWorks disc than a carpet store sample rack, as Mahaffey packs countless musical dialects into his progressive pop. Elements of jazz, rock, and world music get pasted into three-minute experiments which, while impressive, don't necessarily make Breakfast with Girls a compelling listen
