Singing the Blues" is a popular song written by Melvin Endsley and published in 1956. The song was first recorded and released by Marty Robbins in 1956. It is not related to the 1920 jazz song "Singin' the Blues" recorded by Frank Trumbauer and Bix Beiderbecke in 1927. The best-known recording was released in October 1956 by Guy Mitchell and spent ten weeks at number 1 on the . Billboard chart from December 8, 1956, to February 2, 1957. An example of the .

Hugh Laurie-officially the most watched leading man on TV, thanks to his starring role in House-has put his stethoscope back in its box and his Golden Globes on the shelf, and has chosen instead the life of a bluesman, albeit a very British one. An accomplished pianist and singer, Laurie is currently touring behind his debut album, Let Them Talk-a collection of standards that features such musical icons as Dr. John, Irma Thomas and Tom Jones. Have you felt silly or self-conscious about being a middle-class British chap playing the blues? Not really, because I just think of it as music-the conventional cliché of the blues doesn’t really do the music justice, I don’t think. I hope there are compensations for the very real charge that this is not authentic, but then, authenticity is such a flaky concept anyway. It can be very misunderstood and misused, I think.

Laurie, the five-time Emmy winning star of Fox's hit medical drama series "House," will enter the studio this summer to record the as-yet-untitled album, which will be produced by two-time Grammy Award winner, writer Joe Henry. The record, which will see Laurie play piano and contribute vocal tracks as well as collaborate with a number of (unnamed) guest musicians, will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Records, although an exact release date is yet to be announced. In addition to the regular blues piano recitals that his character Dr Gregory House performs in the Fox drama series "House," Laurie recently contributed to Meat Loaf's 2010 studio set "Hang Loose, Teddy Bear" (Virgin). He is also the keyboard player in the . based charity group Band From TV alongside fellow actors Greg Grunberg (drums), James Denton (guitar) and Bob Guiney (vocals).

Making an album is treacherous territory for Laurie: for the most part, people are suspicious of celebrity hyphenates, whether they be painter-directors, rapper-designers or actor-novelists. Laurie has also written a novel, in fact: The Gun Seller, published in 1996, is an odd but enjoyable cross between the international intrigue of Robert Ludlum and the mannered comedy of P. G. Wodehouse, leading to prose like there I was, the model in diagram (c) in the chapter headed ‘Neck-Breaking: The Basics So Laurie told him the simple truth. He wanted to make the album because he loved the blues. The resulting disc of 15 cover songs was recorded in eight days of sessions in Los Angeles, and one in New Orleans for Allen Toussaint’s horn arrangements.

MARTIN: Laurie released his debut album in 2011 "Let Them Talk. And now he's following up that effort with his second studio album, this one is called "Didn't It Rain. Hugh Laurie joins me now from NPR West. MARTIN: You do a fair bit of singing on this album. LAURIE: Sorry about that. MARTIN: Hugh Laurie, his new album is called "Didn't It Rain. He joined us from the studios that NPR West. Mr. Laurie, it has been such a pleasure.
