Wakin on a Pretty Daze is the fifth studio album by American indie rock musician Kurt Vile, released on April 9, 2013 on Matador Records. Produced by both John Agnello and Kurt Vile & the Violators, the album is the first not to feature contributions from long-time collaborator and former bandmate Adam Granduciel. Regarding the album's thematic and lyrical content, Vile stated, "It’s just about my life, without thinking too much about it. I feel comfortable with the lyrics
Wakin on a Pretty Daze is Kurt Vile's most spacious, becalmed record yet, and it contains some of his best-ever brand of cosmic stand-up. The album moves at its own stately pace and with its own serene logic and time. Or the way the silvery guitar leads snake through the album without ever assuming the foreground, murmuring things that reward attention in the same way Vile's lyrics do. The way the drums nudge gently into the title refrain on "Girl Called Alex", and how Vile's "I wanna-" is abruptly cut off by a stinging guitar; these details, small by themselves, offer accumulated testimony to Vile's mastery of his world. Wakin on a Pretty Daze breezes past like a Klonopin dream, and radiates an easy confidence that is as rewarding to return to as a melody.

Wakin, the dawn of day And I gotta think about What I wanna say Phone ringing off the shelf I guess it wanted to kill himself Wakin on a pretty day Don't know why I ever go away It's hard to explain My love, in this daze
Philadelphia songsmith Kurt Vile's 2011 album Smoke Ring for My Halo was a definitive shift for the artist away from home-recorded overexposed fuzz pop toward a more sprawling, textural, and most markedly introspective style.
Wakin on a Pretty Daze, Vile's fifth album, is the product of both thought and effort. That it feels like it took neither thought nor effort is a product of talent. Mostly, ‘Wakin On A Pretty Daze’ shows Kurt Vile’s determination to make something of that slice of genius he got for free.

Wakin On A Pretty Daze comes into focus with context, though, as does any accomplished record. Without understanding that Kurt Vile is just another guy, his poetically vague nothings come across as little more than, well, vague nothings. The songwriter displays his compliance with life in just about any interview, from raving about his family to praising his hometown . Despite how easily the album may come across to first-time listeners, Vile himself admits to perfectionism in the studio, and a desire to get this guitar composer-y record to fruition.
