But for Machine Head, it seems as though most people were content with what they were constantly releasing since 2004. Simply put, if Supercharger and The Burning Red taught us anything, is that diversity is not their strength, perhaps even their biggest weakness. But even so, Robb Flynn was willing to take that risk. So much so that he sent out "warnings" to his fans that Catharsis was going to be a much different beast altogether. The ironic thing to me is that Catharsis should've been the album that Machine Head needed
The latest album took several listens for me to get into it if I'm honest. But I think the material is excellent and after seeing them live recently, I have a greater appreciation for Machine Head as artists in general. They played for over 3 hours, no opening act, and were absolutely astounding. even to me what felt like a slog of 3 hours of metal! That's unheard of in this genre and to see them smiling and responding to the crowd was really something. If you watch the live.
Machine Head is that for me. And it fucking kills me to say this bu. atharsis may be the worst album the band has ever written. It’s fifteen tracks and seventy-five minutes, it’s rap metal like The Burning Red has never seen, it’s nu-metal like Supercharger doesn’t wanna know, and it’s the kind of forced songwriting no Machine Head fan wants to hear. Volatile gets things moving with the kind of deep, headbangable riffs that’ll please all show patrons and their bro-tanked compatriots. It’s got rabid, spitfire vocals and a Bulldozer -like punch
MACHINE HEAD's ninth full-length album, "Catharsis" was recorded with Zack Ohren (FALLUJAH, ALL SHALL PERISH) at Sharkbite Studios in Oakland, California. A January 2018 release via Nuclear Blast is expected. MACHINE HEAD's latest track, "Is There Anybody Out There?", cracked the Top 40 on the Active Rock chart in the United States in August 2016
