Ruders's first compositions date from the mid-1960s. Ruders regards his own compositional development as a gradual one, with his true voice emerging with the chamber concerto, Four Compositions, of 1980. His notable students include Marc Mellits.

The City in the Sea is a lugubriously eloquent contralto (Mette Ejsing) cantata on a deathly poem by Poe. Anima (Cello Concerto No 2) is a fine single movement, beautifully dominated here by the soloist, Michaela Fukacova, whose lyricism is inspired by Jung’s emphasis on the female side of the male psyche, an interest that led Ruders to Atwood.
