Brendan Kelly (musician). Background information. In 2010, Kelly released a split album with Joe McMahon of punk rock band Smoke or Fire, entitled Wasted Potential. Kelly's half of the split contained acoustic versions of Lawrence Arms songs (both his and McCaughan), as well as a cover of "Kiss the Bottle" by Jawbreaker. In 2011, Kelly released a 3-song EP, A Man with the Passion of Tennessee Williams, with new band the Wandering Birds.

It's not a particularly new concept, but this split acoustic album from Brendan Kelly of the Lawrence Arms and Joe McMahon from Smoke or Fire hits the spot just fine. Featuring six songs each of the respective gent's band's songs reworked in an acoustic setting, along with a cover tune from each, Wasted Potential showcases both of their strong songwriting skills. In fact, overall, McMahon's acoustic versions tread on the weaker side of Kelly's, providing a bit of a downer for the second half of this album. Something about his impassioned whine is mostly better suited to loud, anthem-based punk. Stripped down he sounds, from time to time, a little like a frustrated Muppet.

It is an acoustic split CD between Brendan Kelly and Joe McMahon. Kelly is a guy from a band that is called the Lawrence Arms. They are a punk band from Chicago that writes songs about drunks. McMahon is in Smoke or Fire, a punk group that is secretly from Massachusetts but pretends to be from Virginia. They also write songs about drunks, but sometimes they also write songs about important issues like equal rights. Both of these bands are very good and I like them very much. And, you guys, they have just delivered on to mine very ears an acoustic collection of sexcellent proportions. Part of this is because his take on Johnny Cash's "Let the Train Whistle Blow" originally appeared on the Johnny Cash tribute album All Aboard, which I already own. It's a solid rendition, but I could've used something different. His reinterpretations of SoF tunes is stellar, though.
