Elegy is the third album by the then-emerging Finnish band Amorphis. The album is their first to feature a majority of clean vocals, sung by new vocalist Pasi Koskinen. The music and lyrics are inspired by the traditional Finnish ballads and poems compiled in the Kanteletar by Elias Lönnrot in 1840. The primary genre of the album is progressive metal, with strong folk influence, as well as elements of melodic death metal and heavy metal. Many of the album's tracks, .

Elegy’ was the second album on which Amorphis showed a massive stylistic change and it would not be the last, but it does say something that the signature sound they currently have is not too far removed from what can be heard on ‘Elegy’. It is simply an excellent work of melancholic Finnish metal. Amorphis is without a doubt one of the most influential metal bands of the 90s, and they are easily my pick for the best Finnish metal outfit of all times. Nevertheless, this record should without the glimpse of a doubt be in the collection of any open minded metal fan. Tastier Than This Rice Krispies Treat I’m Eating - 86%. OzzyApu, March 18th, 2011.
This album here is just filled with all kinds of amazing, creative, melodic, heavy metal driven riffing, and beautiful, enchanting, and all around awesome solos and deliciously addicting melodies all plastered throughout with pure heart and passion. Now as far as Tomi Koivusaari's vocals on here go, they're just great. All in all, "Tales From the Thousand Lakes" is an absolute timeless masterpiece of Finnish metal in which Amorphis have created with here, and it is also highly regarded by many fans as the definitive highlight of the band's career, and I seriously couldn't agree more
