Otis Redding (Otis Ray Redding J. September 9, 1941 – December 10, 1967) was an American, highly influential, rhythm & blues and soul singer, and songwriter. He is considered one of the greatest singers in the history of American popular music and a seminal artist in soul music and rhythm and blues. His singing style influenced many other soul artists of the 1960s. During his lifetime, his recordings were produced by Stax Records, based in Memphis, Tennessee, and exemplify the sound of Stax.
Respect" is a song written and originally released by American recording artist Otis Redding in 1965. The song became a 1967 hit and signature song for soul singer Aretha Franklin. The music in the two versions is significantly different, and through a few changes in the lyrics, the stories told by the songs have a different flavor. Redding's version is a plea from a desperate man, who will give his woman anything she wants.
At 6’1, he seems to tower over Booker T & the MG’s guitarist Steve Cropper and bassist Donald Duck Dunn on the tiny Oslo stage. No matter that Redding and Cropper are actually the same height, Redding looks a clear half foot taller. It may seem an odd first reaction, but it’s an indication of the amazing physicality of Redding’s performances
