John Lee Hooker was born in Clarksdale, Mississippi on August 22, 1917. As a blues singer and guitarist, he began his career in Detroit in 1948 with the release of Boogie Chillun, the biggest of his several hit records. He toured continually, and among "deep blues" artists enjoyed an unusually successful career, appearing in concerts and on recordings with many of the leading figures in rock. He learned how to play guitar from his stepfather and had a great interest in gospel music .
His best known songs include "Boogie Chillen" (1948) and "Boom Boom" (1962).

The House Of The Blues, first released on CD in 1986, is a collection of John Lee Hooker recordings from 1951 and 1952, originally compiled for an LP release in 1960. Now, Hooker compilations of material from this period can vary wildly when it comes to sound quality, so I'll address that issue before going any further. This disc certainly deserves to be up there with some of the better known premium priced compilations and not discarded amid the masses of more questionably sourced budget rubbish. As for the music itself, aside from the two bad quality tracks (both of which feature a backing band) they are largely Hooker solo, with just a couple of tracks featuring the additional guitar of Eddie Kirkland.
