7 Directions’ - is rooted firmly in the African Cosmology of the Bantu-Kongo and in particular the writings of Kongo scholar Dr Kimbwandende Kia Bunseki Fu-Kiau. Musically we think it’s Nkisi’s most singular record to date - explicitly exploring - via 7 hyper-focused hyper-modern tracks - the incredible polyrhythms of congolese percussion music. The album’s design - directed by Nkisi and realised by UIQ inhouse remote viewer Dave Gaskarth is based around the 'vee' from the book on cosmology.

7 Directions' is due out January 1. Lee Gamble's UIQ label will release the debut album of Nkisi, 7 Directions, out January 18. The Congolese-born, London-based producer and DJ co-founded NON Worldwide in 2015 alongside Chino Amobi and Angel Ho, as a collective of "African artists, and of the diaspora, who use sound as their primary media to articulate the visible and invisible structures that create binaries in society, and in turn, distribute power. Nkisi will release an album via UIQ in January. 7 Directions is the Congolese-born, London-based artist's first official full-length, following EPs this year and last. UIQ, the label run by Lee Gamble, describes it as electronic interpolations of Congolese percussive polyrhythms. Conceptually, it's informed by the cosmology of the Bantu-Kongo, a Central African ethnic group, and particularly by the scholar Dr. Kimbwandende Kia Bunseki Fu-Kiau. It's a follow-up to Terminal, the album from Egyptian abstract hip-hop producer Zuli, which comes out on UIQ in November . 7 Directions is the first full length record by Congolese born, Belgian raised sound activist and electronic producer Melika Ngombe Kolongo aka Nkisi. The album, released by Lee Gamble's UIQ imprint, explores African polyrhythms through a contemporary club music lens, while interpreting Congolese scholar Dr Kimbwandende Kia Bunseki Fu-Kiau's writings on Bantu-Kongo cosmology. When we hear before we see, voice and sound waves interplay between consciousness and hallucinations, says Nkisi. The Wire will host a live Q+A with Nkisi at the Bleep X store in Dalston, London, on 18 January, also the album's release date.
