The Greatest White Liar is one such record, one of the more peculiar and intriguing releases of the year. It is at best a facsimile of all the hits of pre-hippie-hair-era Beatles, and at worst the same. These are all the songs you've heard on that oldies station that goes way back to the black and white decades, only you'll be stuck trying to sing the lyrics. Or hum the melody perfectly the first time through. Or remember exactly where it was you first heard that song. Nic Armstrong - Greatest White Liar. Good stuff here in the 60's pop rock style. This is a well produced, well executed vision of music that sounds dated but is newly made. I enjoyed every track and compare this most closely with some early Kinks and Donovan. No wicked guitar solos here, just short, catchy tunes with clear vocals. The only question I have is why no follow up disc from Nic Armstrong? Recommended.
Some photos of Nic Armstrong depict the 24-year-old in a corduroy peaked cap similar to the one John Lennon wore in Hamburg; in others he's wearing the tight scarf of 1964 Bob Dylan. The Nottingham-based Geordie, a former art student, is an unashamed retrohead who can re-create late-1950s and early-1960s sounds at will. Other favourites of his are Eddie Cochran and Gene Vincent. With his dewy-grainy voice immaculately analogue-recorded by White Stripes producer Liam Watson, and melodies so instant they could arrive in a jar, these primal stompers such as On a Promise are made to be blared out of car stereos. However, darker moments display depth beneath the dust - especially I'll Come to You, a spectacularly haunting peek into a fracturing relationship.

The Greatest White Liar (New West). Nic Armstrong & The Thieves. The Greatest White Liar (New West). From the first notes of The Greatest White Liar, there's no doubt Nic Armstrong & the Thieves are British. Armstrong even sounds like John Lennon occasionally. Despite the retro feel of this debut, it succeeds because of Armstrong's spirited melodies, his ragged but right band, and the ripe affection they possess for their musical precursors. Producer Liam Watson (White Stripes, the Zutons, the Kills) gives 25-year-young Armstrong and his originals just the right amount of air or fuzzy ambience to really shine. Stomping opener "I Can't Stand It," shimmy shake of "On a Promise," and bouncy twang of "The Finishing Touch" are all straight out of the garage, the.
Description: Though he was born well after the pure beginnings of rock & roll had become boardroom contrivances and generic pastiches, Nic Armstrong has tapped into the real deal and made it his own. This young Brit fell under the spell of the Americans who inspired the first wave of English rockers, as well as those lauded countrymen (Beatles, Kinks, Stones, et. A sharp sense of melody informs both the uptempo numbers and the ballads. Too Long For Her" sounds like a long lost sixties nugget without being cloying or nostalgic.
