BBC National Orchestra of Wales. Martyn Brabbins Conductor. Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No 2. Alfredo Napoleão Composer. BBC National Orchestra of Wales. Author: Jeremy Nicholas. The concerto by Napoleão (or Napoleon) is considerably and consistently more interesting, not least for its key. (I read that young Daniil Trifonov has just premiered his own E flat minor Concerto, but are there any others?) The lengthy (19'53") first movement, with its atmospheric misterioso opening, makes it clear that he knew his Chopin and Liszt, while the first subject of the brief Scherzo owes much to Litolff (though not its flaccid second subject). Had Gottschalk ever written a piano concerto, the boisterous finale might have been the result
Oswald’s Piano Concerto in G Minor is rich with opportunities to demonstrate musical artistry and Portuguese virtuoso Artur Pizarro executes the solo line with class. It is clear Oswald, like Rachmaninov, knew how to use the form to demonstrate his own ability as a pianist. The soloist has to possess impressive stamina to complete this technical marathon. In the first movement, Pizarro embodies nervous energy as he dances around the keyboard. A brief moment of respite comes in the second movement where the orchestra gently sings the theme as Pizarro plays arpeggios. The BBC National Orchestra.
Artur Pizarro began his piano studies in Lisbon with Campos Coelho, professor of piano at the Lisbon Conservatory of Music, at age three. At age five, he began studying with pianist Sequeira Costa, also in Lisbon. In 1977, after Sequeira Costa accepted a position as Distinguished Professor of Piano at the University of Kansas, Artur followed him to Lawrence, Kansas, in the United States. Artur Pizarro (piano), BBC National Orchestra of Wales/Brabbins (Hyperion). Oswald’s concerto, almost Russian in its intensity, gets off to a brooding, heroic start and melts just a little too far towards schmaltz in the slow movement before skittering off into a manic finale. Napoleão’s concerto No 2 in E flat minor grips with a first movement worthy of Chopin, and delights with a sparkling central scherzo but the wandering, occasionally twee third movement is disappointing, despite the dedicated playing of Artur Pizarro.
