Where My Aim Is True implied punk rock with its lyrics and stripped-down production, This Year's Model sounds like punk. Not that Elvis Costello's songwriting has changed - This Year's Model is comprised largely of leftovers from My Aim Is True and songs written on the road. It's the music that changed. After releasing My Aim Is True, Costello assembled a backing band called the Attractions, which were considerably tougher and wilder than Clover, who played on his debut
This, Elvis Costello's second album, marked the beginning of a long and illustrious collaboration with the Attractions, not to mention one of those glorious moments in which a musician discovers a sound that is all his own. While My Aim Is True was largely a guitar-centered album, the sonic core of This Year's Model consists almost entirely of drums, bass, and keyboards. As a result, it's not only a more complex and dynamic album, but also one that steers well clear of the retro guitar twang that marred the less interesting bits of his debut
Elvis' landmark first album with his formidable back-up band the Attractions just bristles with tension and energy on such sensational tunes as Pump it Up; Lipstick Vogue, and Radio, Radio. With his second album, Elvis Costello firmly established himself as one of rock's-not just punk/new wave's-premier singer-songwriters. Building on the promise of his '77 debut, My Aim Is True, Costello put together a backing touring trio, the Attractions (keyboardist Steve Nieve, bassist Bruce Thomas, and drummer Pete Thomas), and their versatility helped Costello define. Take his sophomore album, This Year's Model as exhibit A, may it please the court. Never one to shy away from mocking the materialistic and increasingly uncultured nature of both the pop world and middle-class society, Costello quips "it does not move me/even though I've seen the movie" on the highlight song "(I Don't Want to Go to) Chelsea" . Evidently Elvis Costello wasn't the only young Englishman with some grievances to address. But Costello was witty and biting. He had more to say than baselessly condemning the Queen and her "fascist regime", and it said it in a far more appealing fashion.
