Lawrence "Bud" Freeman (April 13, 1906 – March 15, 1991) was an American jazz musician, bandleader, and composer, known mainly for playing the tenor saxophone, but also able at the clarinet. He had a smooth and full tenor sax style with a heavy robust swing. He was one of the most influential and important jazz tenor saxophonists of the big band era. His major recordings were "The Eel", "Tillie's Downtown Now", "Crazeology", "The Buzzard", and "After Awhile", composed with Benny Goodman.
This album, which will hopefully be reissued on CD someday, is closer to mainstream than to Dixieland and is a fine example of Bud Freeman's work at the halfway point of his productive career.

BUD FREEMAN is a swing music artist. The Test of Time Swing 1955. Bud Freeman Swing 1955.
Freeman played with Tommy Dorsey's Orchestra (1936–1938) as well as for a short time Benny Goodman's band in 1938 before forming his own band, the Summa Cum Laude Orchestra (1939–1940). Freeman joined the US Army during World War II, and headed a US Army band in the Aleutian Islands. Later in the decade Freeman spent some time on the Isle of Man during part of which he was the guest of well known Manx jazz musician and broadcaster, Jim Caine. Recounted as a keen devotee of the game Scrabble, as well as a fervent Anglophile, this resulted in Freeman having a nickname bestowed on him by the Caine family, becoming known as the "Anglo Saxophonist. In addition to this, Freeman presented one of his coats to a son of Jim Caine. Bud Freeman and the Chicagoans (Paramount, 1954). Test of Time (Bethlehem, 1955). Bud Freeman (Bethlehem, 1955).
Have two other Bud Freeman LP albums where Freeman plays in smaller groups where you get to hear more of his talent: on The Test of Time and Three's no Crowd one is able to hear more of Bud Freeman play, and they are great albums. But saying that, the album is not bad, just that most of the numbers are not really outstanding. However, since The Eel is such a great number played by Freeman that one cut makes the album worth owning. Bud Freeman had left Benny Goodman's band in 1938 and formed his Summa Cum Laude Orchestra in '39. It was really an Eddie Condon group under Freeman's leadership. Condon and many of his musical associates, including Max Kaminsky-t, Brad Gowans-vtb, Pee Wee Russel-clarinet, and Dave Bowman-p played on all the recordings in this collection. Gowans is replaced by Teagarden on the 8 Famous Chicagoan sides.
