Simultaneously personal and mysterious, specific and ambiguous, Field Report’s self-titled debut album is a collection of 10 songs that consist of folk precision and just enough breathing room to amaze.

27 March at 11:05 ·. We had a great time filming this session for Baeble. Today, Milwaukee's Field Report celebrates the release of their third album, "Summertime Songs" on Verve Forecast. Field Report has got the detailed and nostalgic part of Callahan's lyrics down pat, namedropping over 100 proper nouns into the 15 songs that were whittled down to the album's 11: Doris Day, Glen Shirley, Dom DeLuise, JonBenét Ramsey, the . But unlike Smog and "Fergus Falls", they're excessive. Mostly, Field Report sounds a lot like his old band. When listening to an album like Silent Signs, you can hear the vestiges of Megafaun's telltale banjo twangs and early Bon Iver's lightly brushed drums, but you can also hear how both bands have naturally evolved into autonomous, quite distinct entities; so distinct that Porterfield felt out of place on a recent tour with Megafaun, his former musical collaborators. When Field Report deviates from DeYarmond Edison's retrospectively entry-level folk, however, it's jarring.
Porterfield is a magnificent songwriter, and the years he spent honing these songs to a rich edge shows in this debut album.
Field Report, an anagram of Porterfield's surname, was culled together in the studio while recording their 2012 self-titled debut.

Field Report have garnered the attention of artists like Aimee Mann and Adam Duritz, have toured internationally, and had an entire day (Oct. 22, 2014) dubbed "Field Report Day" in their hometown. Such accolades raise the question of whether the uncertainty mapped onto Field Report's music is warranted, but it's not worth reading into. The self-deprecating music this band churns out merits charm through its relatability, especially to Midwesterners. Speaking allegorically, Marigolden sounds like winter. Although a bit less heavy than the band's debut, Marigolden is not what I would call an upbeat album. However, in the spirit of "digging up the death and replanting," it's got that hint of optimism that we all need in our lives from time to time.
