Buzz Martin has got to be Oregon’s answer to Grandpa Jones. If your toe doesn’t tap when you listen to this album, then friend, you don’t have one. Buzz writes and sings songs about the things he knows and understands. While in his early teens, he went to live with his older sister Nellie and her husband Bill Woosley. They lived in the 5 Rivers Country between Alsea and Waldport, Oregon. Their ranch is 36 miles from any town and it was there that Buzz really started playing quite a bit of music. SIDE ONE 1. Buzz Martin was born in Coon Hollow, Oregon, in 1928. As a kid he began to lose his eyesight and at thirteen was sent to the Oregon School for the Blind. It was during this time that Martin began to play the guitar. He received a corneal transplant and regained his sight while at the school, but tragedy immediately struck again-both his parents died prematurely. Martin was then sent to live with his sister and her husband, a musician and amateur instrument-maker named Bill Woosley.
Buzz Martin's debut LP is a remarkably vivid and detailed portrait of working-class life in the forests of the Pacific Northwest. Where There Walks a Logger There Walks a Man bursts with pride, wit, and humanity, transporting listeners to a world few know exist. With its colorful phrases and euphemisms, the logging lexicon proves a fertile source for Martin's songs, which recall Johnny Cash in their musical simplicity and emotional depth

Where There Walks a Logger, There Walks a Man, Buzz Martin’s debut full-length, was released in 1968 on the Tacoma, Washington–based Ripcord Records. Martin’s producer, Bob Gibson, cofounded the label; Martin was the only artist on i. All but one of the album’s ten songs center around logging. The exception is a swaggering honky-tonk number about making out in a Model A, because almost every logger that I’ve known has had a Model A at some time or another, Martin explains in a brief spoken intro . By the standard Buzz set with his own early records, Solid Gold was a disaster both creatively and financially. But the album doesn’t deserve the blame for his fading prospects. His music career was on the downturn, Martin’s son Steve remembers.
